PRIVATE MUSICAL INSTRUCTION
Private lessons in musical instruments or voice are available for all
Grinnell College students, whether beginner or advanced, music
major or non-music major. In a typical semester, approximately
20-25% of all Grinnell students take private lessons for credit.
For Music majors, private lesson instruction is subsidised at
the junior and senior levels. The department employs 27 instructors
(see listing below) for instruments ranging from flute
to harp to piano and voice. The Bucksbaum
Center for the Arts contains 14 practice
rooms that are open during all building hours.
There are several levels of instruction. In Music 120, students meet
with their instructor in weekly 30-minute lessons and are expected to
practice a minimum of one-half hour each day, receiving 1 credit for
their studies. Music 220 Performance:
Private Instruction meets for a half-hour each week, and students
are expected to practice a minimum of one hour each day and perform
at least once in public during the semester. Music
221 Performance: Advanced Private Instruction meets for an hour
each week, and students are expected to practice for an hour each day
and perform at least once in public during the semester. Music 420 is
for students presenting a recital, and Music 495 is for seniors presenting
their senior projects, which often include a recital. Music 220, 221,
and 420 all earn 2 credits, and music 495 earns 4 credits.
