Fresh Flutes from Grinnell is one of the ensembles open to flutists at Grinnell College, founded in 1989 and in its 18th season presenting concerts. The ensemble – which performs in duo, trio, quartet and full choir formats – is considered one of Iowa’s outstanding flute groups.  Any flutist on campus is welcome to participate; you need not be taking flute lessons, though the majority of the ensemble is made up of members of the flute studio.   Dr. Claudia Anderson is director and head of the flute studio at Grinnell.

Fresh Flutes is a terrific musical experience, a wonderful flute “bonding” experience, and lots of fun!  We perform twice a year in Sebring-Lewis Recital Hall on campus (one of the country’s best hall acoustics for flute) and often at the annual Iowa Flute Festival.  Grinnell College will host the IFF in 2008, an event which draws all the major flute studios in the state of Iowa and features world-class guest artists. This year's primary guest artist is Marianne Gedigian, Flute Professor at University of Texas at Austin. Also appearing as guest artist will be Jill Felber, Professor of Flute at UC-Santa Barbara and member of the innovative flute duo ZAWA! Any flutist or flute enthusiast is invited to attend on March 8, 2008; please contact Claudia Anderson for further information regarding Iowa Flute Festival 2008.

The Music Department owns alto and bass flutes and several piccolos, including an outstanding new Hammig piccolo.  Repertoire that will be performed on our 2007 fall concert includes music by Alan Hovahness, G.F. Handel, J. S. Bach, G.P. Telemann, John LaMontaine, Victor Rioja, and Cynthia Folio.

The Grinnell College flute studio is full of committed and talented students, many of whom present solo recitals during their junior and senior years; there is a long tradition of excellence, collegiality, and high numbers among flutists on campus.  Other opportunities to perform include orchestra, symphonic band, department student recitals, the chamber music program, Collegium Musicum on one of the department's fine collection of early musical instruments, and flute studio class.

Please contact Claudia Anderson with further questions regarding Fresh Flutes and/or the flute studio at Grinnell College.
