Music Department Chair's Notes 05/06

Strategic Plan

Departmental Issues

Curriculular Issues:

-Assessment of overall departmental faculty make-up.  Should we pursue a "Music Of The Americas" position again?  Can this position be successfully incorporated into the Expanding Knowledge Initiative?

-how to use Curd funds

-festival

-special study tours

-ongoing program for ensemble commissions (EM)

-Ninth Semester Fellowship (approved May 2005)

-other ideas?

-How to use roughly $300,000 in designated gifts

-instrument purchases: c. $30,000 fortepiano, $9,000 for natural horns.  Other?

-AMAs received a 5% wage increase in 2004.  Are there other ways to improve job satisfaction, strengthen the work of AMAs, and improve communication between full-time faculty and AMAs?  Evaluation of AMAs is minimal, and there are no remunerative rewards for excellence.  How can this situation be improved?

-should we propose a Lecturer position in voice (remedy for the frequent turn-over we have experienced in voice AMA position--a particularly high-enrollment, high-visibility area)?

-how can we develop and implement more effective mentoring for junior faculty?

-(please suggest more issues)
