Information for AMAs

Registration:
1. You will be given a copy of your class list at registration.
2. As new students appear, discuss their backgrounds and motivation levels
to determine the proper level of study, check and initial their cards,
and update your list.
3. Set lesson times and specify when and where lessons will commence.
4. Sign or initial each student’s Trial Schedule of Courses card
(new registrants) or their Change of Registration form (for pre-registrants).
Make sure that the correct number and section for your offering is on
the student’s registration form – Music 120, 122, 220, 221,
420. (Music 420 requires the Chair’s signature) Students should
generally register for 120 unless you determine that they are intermediate
to advanced n level and ready to practice an hour a day and perform in
public.
5. Carefully confirm the accuracy of the registration records you received
from the Registrar. Notify the office at x3450 if any inconsistencies
between the official registration record and the students you are actually
teaching. Confirm blocks of teaching time with Pam Poynter.
End of Semester Teaching Evaluations are available and provide more consistent
feedback and constructive criticism from your students. They give us material
to draw from in writing letters of recommendation for you and provide
reason for pay increases and other working conditions.
Grading: Set clear goals, keep records, provide feedback. Practice expectations:
1⁄2 or 1 hour daily. If a student has irregular attendance or is
likely to receive a D or F in your course for other reasons, you should
notify the Academic Advising Office at x3702 or send a “Failure/Warning
Report” form to that office available from the Registrar.
AMA Recitals: $150 per AMA; $100 for accompanist; other musicians check
with Chair up to amount reserved. Confirm intent to present recital and
requested budget by September 15. Set date and location with Pam Poynter
in the BCA office; Shannon Harman handles posters and programs. Check
request forms are in the tray under the mailboxes or from http://www.grinnell.edu/offices/accounting/accountspayable/.
Fill out and place in Chair’s mailbox. Tax forms are needed from
any player not already employed by Grinnell College and can be downloaded
from the same website.
Studio Ensembles and Coaching: $40 per hour up to $200 per AMA per semester
to prepare students for public performances. Use a check request form.
Guest Artists: Contact John Rommereim
Housing: Approval of the Chair is necessary for overnight housing expenses
for consecutive teaching days.

Fall: Curd Awards (Music Lesson Scholarships) – All new students
enrolled for private music lessons are eligible to audition for Curd Awards,
which pay for the majority of music lesson fees for the current academic
year. Application forms are available in the BCA office and due Friday
9/2/05. Auditions will be held Saturday, 9/10/05.
Solo Recitals (Music 420): To present a solo recital you must be registered
in Music 420 during the recital semester and in Music 220 or 221 during
the preceding semester of residence at Grinnell; or you must be registered
for the Senior Project (Music 495). You are to turn in a Solo Recital
Proposal Form to Patrice Ewoldt, Student Recital Coordinator, no later
than the end of the seventh week of the semester of residence preceding
your recital semester. Fall 2005 deadline -- October 14.
Grinnell Symphony Soloist Auditions: The GSO Soloist Auditions are open
to orchestral instrumentalists (and saxophonists), vocalists and pianists.
Students auditioning on orchestral instruments must be members of the
Grinnell Symphony Orchestra. Pianists and vocalists must be enrolled in
private lessons, and saxophonists may be either taking lessons or members
of Symphonic Band or Jazz Band. Selected students will perform as soloists
with the GSO in the spring semester. Winners of the previous year’s
auditions must wait one year before auditioning again. All audition repertoire
must be approved by the GSO director prior to the application deadline.
Applications are due Friday 10/28/05. Auditions will be held Sunday, 11/13/05.
Spring: Hill Awards – All students eligible. Seniors receive cash
awards; returning students receive subsidies for music lessons the following
year. Returning students special recognition: Top Vocalist – Frances
Collins James Award; Top Instrumentalist – Curd Award. Applications
are due Friday, 4/14/06. Auditions will be held Friday, 4/28/06.
Student Recitals: All Accompanist Forms are due four weeks before the
recital date. All Recital Application Forms with program information are
due two weeks before the recital date. All forms are on the front desk
in the office. Please be sure your students know this!
