The Music Department offers an opportunity for continued independent study
by a music major in the semester immediately following graduation. This
fellowship provides some financial support for a semester of personal
research to develop a stronger portfolio in preparation for graduate work.
The Fellowship in Music provides benefits and, with these benefits, come
obligations to the Department.
BENEFITS:
A stipend of $3,500 is awarded in four equal payments in September, October,
November, and December. An additional budget of up to $600 may be provided
for project support to offset the cost of supplies. The Fellow will have
access to Bucksbaum facilities.
OBLIGATIONS and DUTIES:
The Fellow is expected to serve the Department by assisting with minor
class-related jobs, giving demonstrations in his/her discipline and/or
presentations of work in progress when called upon, and presenting his/her
work in a formally at the conclusion of the semester.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
To apply for the Fellowship in Music, interested seniors should present
a letter of application to the Music Department which addresses the following
questions:
* Why is the Fellowship in Music important and necessary to you?
* What is the scope of the project (e.g. What repertoire do you plan to
learn? What is the length and instrumentation of the piece you plan to
write? What is the scope of the paper you plan to write? etc.)
* What goals do you plan to accomplish by way of this project?
* How would this project connect with your plans upon completion of the
Fellowship?
In addition to the application letter, a portfolio must be presented for
review by the Department. This portfolio should focus on the type of work
that you plan to produce, such as a written composition, recordings of
performances, a research paper, or electronic composition. Three to five
work samples are recommended for inclusion.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS:
The application and portfolio is due the first Friday in February. Please
check back to be aware of any modifications as the deadline approaches.
REVIEW COMMITTEE:
The committee reviewing applications is made up of voting members of the
Music department faculty. The department reserves the right not to reward
any fellowships in a given year.
