August 27 2004 email from Jon Chenette to John Rommereim:
John,
Here are some excerpts from previous department documents concerning proposed
use of the Curd funds, including, in blue, the discretionary need-based
music lesson awards.

Guidelines on the Curd Music Department fund from an email I sent to Gene
of 8/26/02:
“At a slightly less developed state, our discussions of the Curd
Fund for the Music Department, which also yields $13,000 annually, have
led us to endorse the following two major ideas, which we imagine taking
place biennially, so that we would do one or the other each year:
1. Travel options in connection with courses $10,000
+ other sources
(for instance, a course on Celtic music in which students could elect
to go on a trip to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales after the end of the semester.)
2. Major music festival with changing focus $10,000
+ other sources
involving students in planning and carrying out
coordinated with gallery programs, etc.
(”Prairie Music Festival,” which might be chamber music one
year, Latin American Music another, early music another, and choral music
another, for instance)”
According to John’s minutes from our 4/19/02 meeting, we approved
the travel option for this year (probably to be pursued next semester
in conjunction with Jorge’s Latin American music course) and decided
to revisit the festival idea this fall to see if we would like to pursue
it for the following year and/or repeat the travel option in conjunction
with a course. We said that we would meanwhile push for the hiring of
an events planner to facilitate the organization of future festivals.

Scholarships for lessons for needy students would come from Curd, in accord
with the following policy I drafted last summer and the Department apparently
approved last fall:

Draft proposal by Jon Chenette for Department discussion:
The Department of Music would like to disburse the Curd Endowed Scholarship/Prize
as a prize fund approximately as follows:
$4,000 to fund the Fall "Curd Awards" to subsidize music lessons
for meritorious incoming students during their first year, based on auditions
held early in the fall semester (approx. 6 awards at
$550 per student plus expense for judging the competition)
$1,000 to fund the "Curd Award for Outstanding Instrumentalist",
selected from the returning students (i.e., seniors are ineligible) at
the Spring music lesson awards competition
$6,000 to fund "Curd Awards for Music Study and Research" to
support juniors or seniors seeking to attend a workshop, conference, or
festival that will nurture professional development in music and/or enhance
preparation for the senior project
$2,000 for need-based music lesson awards made at the discretion of the
Department Chair <or the Department as a whole> upon recommendation
by Applied Music Associates or ensemble directors and after consultation
with the Office of Financial Aid.
