PRESERVATION 101 Instructors

Helen Alten, Conservator and President of the Northern States Conservation Center , gave the first preservation training session over the ICN for ICPC in 1996.

Kristin Baum, Assistant Conservator, University of Iowa Libraries. Baum has studied bookbinding and paper making at the UI Center for the Book and participated in the "Chemistry for Conservators" course hosted by Johns Hopkins University.

Kathleen Edwards is curator of prints, drawings, photographs and new media at the University of Iowa Museum of Art. She was formerly the director of The Print Center in Philadelphia. Kathy has an MA in Art Education from Philadelphia College of Art.

Gary Frost, Conservator, University of Iowa Libraries . Frost is an educator in book art and book conservation. He has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia University in New York and the University of Texas at Austin.

Julia Golden is the Curator of the Paleontologic Collections and teaches the Collection Care and Management course at the University of Iowa.

Bruce Hamous, is an architect with OPN Architects in Cedar Rapids. Hamous has worked on many library and museum building projects

Ivan Hanthorn, Associate Professor and Conservator, Iowa State University Library. Hanthorn is a trained conservator and preservation administrator; his professional education includes two Mellon Internships in Preservation; one in conservation techniques at Johns Hopkins University, and another in preservation administration at Cornell University.

Nancy E Kraft is a strong advocate for preservation , having worked 20 years for the State Historical Society of Iowa and presently Head of the Preservation Department for the University of Iowa Libraries.

Robert Setter, Entomologist, manages the termite monitoring and control program for the University of Iowa.

Rebecca Stuhr is collection development and preservation librarian at Grinnell College Libraries. She has been involved with ICPC since its inception in 1989 and was a member of the board until 2001.

Martha Yoder is Kathy Edwards’ assistant and manages the Print Study Room at the UIMA. She is responsible for the maintenance of the works on paper in the museum, and works with classes that visit the Print Study Room. Martha has an MFA in printmaking from the UI.
