ICPC President Grace Linden's comments on the success of SOS 2007
RE: SOS
I think everyone who attended the annual meeting and SOS this year agrees that it was a great success! I believe that most everyone who had registered came to the event, but I'm not sure if there were any 'walk-in' attendees. I'll have to refer that to Jill Miller or Mary Carpenter who did a great job of checking in people and taking care of the financial arrangements.
The Living History Farms staff (Dawn, Mike, Aaron and Deb) were also a great help, both in giving tours and in helping us set up in the Murray Center. We were driven in an open cart pulled by a tractor from the Murray Center to the middle of Living History Farms. We split into 3 groups and went to 3 different locations for tours - the maintenance/restoration buildings; the Flinn House; and the textile storage and repair shop. After each group toured all 3 facilities we were driven back to the Murray Center for lunch and the afternoon sessions.
Thanks to Nancy Kraft for bringing name tags; taking photographs; setting up the ICPC display and giving reports on ICN and our July retreat at the annual meeting. Thanks to Steve Stenstrom for arranging for the great lunch from Hy-Vee and the break food and for working so closely with the LHF staff in setting up the room arrangements and the LHF tours.
Thanks to Susan Kuecker in giving a presentation on what she learned at the Campbell Center about textile repair at this year's SOS! Susan has offered her services for a future workshop event if needed. We must remember that at future workshop events we will ask our current Campbell Center winners, Bill Kreuger, Tom Munson and Sue Olson to give talks at what they learned at the Campbell Center!
Thanks to Nancy Neumann for giving her presentation on newspaper indexing. Nancy mentioned that some library staff from both large and small Iowa libraries in attendance and were seeking advice on how to do newspaper indexing.
Thanks to Mike Witmer for his slide presentation on LHF. I wish I could have seen it - but I was giving a session on Preservation on a Budget! The attendees in my session were great! They gave samples of what they do in their collections and even gave me a few hints on how to preserve artifacts on a budget!
It was great seeing Roger Natte, Ruth Hall and Gary Cameron at S.O.S. We missed the other board members, but realize that things do come up that prevent people from attending. We hope to see all the board members. who can arrange to come at our summer retreat, on July 16th at Steve Stenstrom's home in Windsor Heights. Thanks also to Lucy David who helped with pre-workshop arrangements but couldn't attend.
Oh, yes, and one other thing. Nancy Kraft and I were in the LHF session with Aaron, a collections specialist at LHF, when he mentioned that he had learned about preservation by attending workshop sessions such as one that was sponsored by ICPC! What a great thing to hear, right Nancy? We are getting the word out to Iowans who are interesting in preserving Iowa's heritage! Yea for us!
Three morning sessions include behind the scenes tours at Living History
Farms:
1. Textile Tour of LHF’s Historic Quilt Collection, viewing their
state of the art textile storage and discussions of ideal storage conditions.
2. Tour of the Historic Flynn House, with discussions on how a living
history museum uses artifacts, restoration issues and artifact care.
3. Maintenance/Artifact Restoration Area Tours, with discussion about
the realities of large and small artifact restoration and using volunteers
in restoration work.
Four afternoon sessions offered are:
1. Two Simple Repairs to Two Common Textile Problems, by Susan Kuecker,
Curator of the African American Historical Museum in Cedar Rapids.
2. Preservation of Museum Collections on a Small Budget, by Grace Linden,

City Public Library.
