END-OF-COURSE RATINGS
HIS-202-01 Modern Latin America
Fall 2006

Q5. Required readings or other course materials helped me to understand the subject matter of the course.

a. Strongly Agree. I really liked the Rosenberg reading. I thought that the economics readings were often difficult to understand without a good knowledge of macro-economics. I thought that the Kinsbruner book was not as engaging.
b. Moderately Agree. Some of the reading assignments were too dense and too long.
c. Strongly Agree. I really liked most of the readings, Kinsbruner not my favorite.
d. Strongly Agree. I don’t know much about economics, so the econ-heavy readings were difficult. But I guess they helped me understand it. Where are the primary sources?
e. Strongly Agree. The only time I didn’t like the readings was if the author employed lots of very technical economic terms. I also didn’t enjoy Kinsbruner and felt we had already basically covered the important aspects of the (?) struggle.
f. (Read Scale Wrong! See comments.) Strongly Disagree. The Chasteen was terrific! No complaints about any of the articles, either.
g. Strongly Agree. Children of Cain was cool to read but I don’t know if I learned anything.
h. Moderately Agree. The Chasteen book was very useful. There were so many pdf readings it was hard to keep track.
i. Strongly Agree. Overall really good readings. Some were boring, but had good messages.
j. Slightly Agree. Some readings were over my head, particularly the economics stuff. Would be helpful if you send questions out for each/points to take note of, and send earlier the day before.
k. Strongly Agree. I liked most of the readings and most were well written. Didn’t like Kinsbruner.
l. Moderately Agree. Era of the Cuban Revolution is an example of a good reading we have covered in class.
m. Moderately Agree. No comment.
n. Moderately Agree. For the most part, however some readings could be skipped and I could still understand classes.
o. Strongly Agree. We had a very good range of readings. It might have been nice to have other mediums, such as video clips, etc.
p. Strongly Agree. Required Readings = (ed) the subject matter of the course.
q. Strongly Agree. Great readings for the most part.
r. Strongly Agree. Everyone is badgering me about finishing this so we can study for the exam.
s. Strongly Agree. The best books were Wright, Children of Cain, Chasteen, and the reading about (?Iran/Guatemala?). I did not like Kinsbrunner, the reading on corporatism in Brazil (too specific). I also liked reading articles with opposing viewpoints (e.g. lib. vs. cons. on neoliberalism).
t. Nothing Marked. It was helpful to read various accounts of the same idea/events. Example: Neoliberalism. It was very helpful to start with Chasteen to know where we were going with the course. Kinsbruner was very difficult to get through.
u. Slightly Agree. Sometimes they were too long so I’d lose focus.
v. Moderately Agree. The books were great. The e-reserve pieces tend to be too economically-focused and boring.
