END-OF-COURSE RATINGS
HIS-202-01 Modern Latin America
Fall 2006
Q4. The oral and written work, tests, and/or other assignments helped me to understand the subject matter of the course.
a. Moderately Agree. I like how the class had both a research paper with optimon
freedom to choose a topic.
b. Moderately Agree. No comment.
c. Strongly Agree. Turning in pieces of the paper was very helpful. I felt like
I got constructive feedback on the essay test.
d. Strongly Agree. It does what it’s suppose to—make me organize
my thoughts clearly. Essay prompts are clearly stated that don’t ramble
unnecessarily.
e. Strongly Agree. Structure helped keep papers very clearly written and thought
out. Submitting various stages of the paper also helped to keep that assignment
fresh and constantly developing.
f. (Read Scale Wrong! See comments.) Strongly Disagree. In terms of our research
paper—on the one hand, I appreciate Prof. Silva’s demands for excellent
writing. On the other hand, sometimes his comments surpassed this and went into
the realm of pickiness.
g. Strongly Agree. Maybe you could incorporate more of class learning into the
paper assignment.
h. Moderately Agree. I would rather write several small papers than one long
paper.
i. Strongly Agree. No comment.
j. Moderately Agree. No comment.
k. Moderately Agree. While sometimes tedious, I’ve really enjoyed my research
paper.
l. Slightly Agree. We could have had a few writing assignments on the readings.
m. Moderately Agree. The way Silva had us write our papers was very helpful—keeping
us to a schedule. It would have been nice to have more guidance for the midsem
exam—it was hard to know what to study.
n. Moderately Agree. Tests: Yes. Paper: the unstructured format/topics of it
meant I got a little off course.
o. Moderately Agree. The test, quiz, and paper were very helpful, but there
wasn’t a wide variety—more short essays/responses may have been
helpful.
p. Moderately Agree. Not really applicable except in regards to our mid-sem
and final, the first of which led to my reviewing and, thus, my further absorbing
what we had covered up to that point in the course.
q. Strongly Agree. Research paper stages helpful!
r. Strongly Agree. Good tests—“contrasting quotes.” Essays
helped me synthesize my ideas.
s. Strongly Agree. Midterm exam was a good review and prof. prepared us well
for it. I liked the freedom of choosing a research paper topic, but I do not
like all of the specific requirements for its structure. Maybe good for first
years, but not for upperclassmen.
t. Strongly Agree. I liked the fact that there were assignments for the large
paper due throughout the semester.
u. Slightly Disagree. Too much reading not enough writing.
v. Slightly Agree. I don’t think that recognizing quotes for a test really
gets to the point of the class. We should have to understand main concepts not
memorize author’s names and words.
