Student Research Opportunities |
I am very interested in involving students in my research in the region of San Ignacio de Moxos in Bolivia's upper Amazon through MIPs, MAPs ("What is a Map"), and independent projects. My overall goal of working with students on this material is to provide analysis of the region and its history that can help to better development activities and otherwise enhance the quality of life of the indigenous communities. I have an enourmous archive of documents in Spanish from the region related to community development, forestry, and indigenous organizing. Students could work with this material with a variety of aims. For example, I am hoping to soon begin work with a student to use these materials to develop a brief history textbook for indigenous students of the Multiethnic Indigenous Territory - a project about which indigenous leaders of the territory are very excited. There is currently no written account of the history of the struggle for the Territory. My hope is to develop a continuous connection between Grinnell College and this culturally and environmentally spectacular region of Bolivia. Toward this end, I would like to sponsor students interested in undertaking internships there with indigenous organizations and NGOs. Grinnell has a number of sources of funded summer internships. (My long term hope is that we could establish a Grinnell Corps program there.) If this sounds like it might interest you, please read over the description of my research in the region and take a look at my slide show. Then come to see me. The sooner we get started, the better!
