emily's project #6 statement of intent
For variety’s sake, I wanted to use the ribbon technique in three distinctly different ways for my three pieces. For my color piece (“Samurais”), I chose to “ribbon” various parts of a photograph and place them atop colored backgrounds in a style inspired by an Andy Warhol poster I have in my room, called “Brooklyn Bridge.” I overlapped three colors -- blue, light red, and green – in various opacities to create many more colors and textures.
In my composition piece (“Papayas”) I used a simple duplicated shape to create some interesting negative space. In a way this piece is also a study of color because although the same colors were used in each shape, they look slightly different depending on what colors are laid next to them. For example, the brown of the lower shape looks slightly lighter than the brown of the higher shape, as does the yellow.
Last, as unmathematical as I am, the piece “Circles” was made using fixed ratios and a whole lot of ovals. This is only a slightly different use of the ribbon technique than in “Papayas,” but with dramatically different results.
