emily's project #1 statement of intent
Okay, so here I present my very first Photoshop art assignments.
I started off thinking that I wanted to focus conceptually on the machine aspect-but everything that I thought of just seemed so pretentious and clichéd. Finally I got over the inevitable (that's right) and just went with it, producing the piece "In Which Man is Obscured by the Machine." I really liked one section of the "Machine" picture, so I decided to repeat that over different parts of the "Man" photo using a blend mode (which I had been curious about since we looked at it that afternoon in your room).
Here comes the low point: then, I put 80,000 filters over another interesting part of the "Machine" photo in attempts to abstract it beyond all recognition. I'm pleased with the composition but I think that the color is weak-especially the black is too heavy. Something that I did early on in the filtering process disabled me from putting any sort of color, filter, or fill over certain white, black, and gray areas. The colors that are in the image are all sampled from the "Nature" photo.
I like what I know I meant to do, but I ended up with "The Sensitive Side of The Machine."
Finally, I gave up with the machine concept, but still wanted to abstract something successfully. I cropped out an interesting chunk of the "Nature" photo, found a phallus, and went to town, creating "Goings On Between the Petals, or Flower and Phallus." It reminds me of the pictures I've seen of Tokyo's red light district, with all its neon lights and edgy pop sex.
