project #2 assignment

"What you see in the photograph isn't what you saw at the time. The real skill of photography is organized visual lying." -Terence Donovan, photographer

Our second assignment will be a digital photography project. Use your digital camera to capture:

  1. An outdoor scene or subject
  2. A portrait of a person
  3. A beautiful photo of something tacky (this should be easy during the xmas season)

At least one of the photos should be composed or treated in a way that makes it abstract. Your outdoor photo doesn't have to be of something natural, nor does your portrait have to be of someone you know. You may use minimal photo editing in Photoshop (i.e. cropping, color/brightness changes, minimal stylization, etc); however, keep in mind that the heart of this project is photography-based, so it is important to retain the integrity of photograph-ness in each piece.

Here's the rub: your end product should be three photos that explore a conceptual or visual theme of your choice. You don't have to decide on the theme before you take the pictures, but your statement of intent should clearly display your thought process as to how your pieces fit your theme.

Don't be intimidated by this-- it's only as complicated as you make it. Example themes: Michigan, toes, shadows, the Categorical Imperative, lines, complementary colors, etc.
