Assignment 5
NMR Guided Reading
February 24, 2000

Concepts to make sure you understand after reading about Becker's book:

The electron spin polarization transfer mechanism for spin-spin coupling,
The difference between 1st-order and higher-order coupling patterns,
The origin of the n+1 rule for determining multiplet structure (e.g. what would the rule be for 2H coupling),
At what point first-order analysis is not possible,
The Karplus curve.

Questions which might help you think about these ideas are the following:

From the end of the chapter:  questions 2 and 3.  For question 3, what will the 14N spectrum look like from 14NH3?  What will the proton spectrum look like from 14NH3?  What about the deuterium spectrum of 15ND3 and the 15N spectrum from 15ND3?

How could you identify which of the following two compounds is which?

Why would it be difficult to tell the difference between these two compounds?

Your answers to these last two questions should be in terms of the Karplus curve.  Models may be helpful.
