JOB SUMMARY

The Muslim Prayer Leader is responsible for preparation of sermon and leadership of our Gumaa Prayer each Friday during the academic year. Additionally, this person will serve as a member of the Religious Life Staff and may be called on for advising and guidance about Islam and Muslim practice by members of the community. This staff member will be engaged in planning and scheduling of the occasional guest speaker, dialogue(s) and programming with Religious Life Staff. Each year, the prayer leader organizes a trip to the mosque to celebrate holy days, in particular, the Eids when they occur while in session.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for preparation and leadership of Gumaa service (Friday prayer service for students, faculty and staff.)

Plan campus festivals and holy day celebrations with students. (Includes assistance with transport to mosque for Eid(s) or other cultural/religious events).

A candidate with a B.A. and many years of experience in Islamic leadership (10-15 yrs.) might be sufficient. However, there is a great desire among Muslim students and Muslim faculty for the Muslim Prayer Leader/Imam to have an educational background that would be consistent with a more learned scholar of the tradition.

Experience in religious leadership and working with college students or young adults is desired. Some counseling experience or a certificate of training in safe and healthy environments (boundaries training) would be helpful.
