Job Summary

The CERA Horticulturist assists faculty and the CERA Manager in the biological management of the Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA). Duties include carrying out restoration work and maintaining restoration equipment, overseeing the maintenance of the field station itself, and providing plant care at the CERA greenhouse and native plantings on campus. They will assist in supporting CERA’s educational mission, including applying treatments to long-term experiments, organizing materials, and preparing for laboratories. A smaller portion of the job entails supporting facilities management with maintenance of grounds on campus.

Preferred Qualifications

State of Iowa certified pesticide applicators license in categories 3OT (turf/ornamentals) and 6 (right of way)
Applicant should have understanding and interest in land preservation and ecological restoration. Applicant should have experience in the operation of all equipment common to a 365 acre field station. This will include, but is not limited to, tractors and attachments, skid loaders, all types of mowing equipment, hand power tools, particularly brush cutters and chain saws, and snow moving equipment. The applicant should have the ability to maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment common to a field station operation. The applicant should have the ability to identify and maintain prairie, savanna, and woodland plant communities, and they should have the ability to identify and control undesirable and invasive species

Responsibility

Assists with CERA field station management, including grounds and buildings and equipment, and support educational activities. Responsibilities include:
*Maintenance- Maintains roads, trails, fencing, signs, vehicles, tools, research infrastructure. Tracks building operation and reports service/repairs needs to FM.
*Restoration- Applies fire; detects and removes/treats invasive plants; collects seeds, cultivates seedlings; sows and transplants to field.
*Education- Applies experimental treatments; prepares teaching labs and outdoor facilities; answers student and visitor questions.
