The basic requirement is 32 credits of work in history with a grade of C or higher, 20 of which must be earned within the History Department of Grinnell College, with at least 8 credits at the 300-level, taken at Grinnell.  The History Department strongly recommends that students contemplating a history major should take as early as possible in their academic careers either History 101 or 105 (as an introduction to history outside the U.S.) AND either History 111 or 112 (as an introduction to U.S. history).  A well-rounded major should also include at least one course from each of the three major geographical regions in our curriculum (U.S., Western Europe, and “non-Western”), and at least one course that examines a pre-industrial society.  The department also recommends that students take the equivalent of at least three semesters of a modern foreign language or two semesters of Latin or Greek, and at least one course in quantitative analysis.  No more than 12 credits at the 100 level may be applied toward the major.
