Don Smith Named L.F. Parker Professor of History

From the Office of Public Relations

The Grinnell College Board of Trustees have approved the appointments of three faculty members to named faculty chairs within their departments, including naming Professor Don Smith the L.F. Parker Professor of History.

This chair was created in honor of the Rev. L.F. Parker, a faculty member, in 1888 by action of the board of trustees. It is endowed by numerous gifts. It was most recently held by Alan Jones, professor emeritus of history.

Don Smith became a professor of history at Grinnell College in 1975 after first coming to Grinnell as an associate professor of history in 1970. He was also named as a Concurrent Professor of History, Nanjing University, Nanjing, China, in 1994.

Smith served as department chair at different times throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He also served as chair of the faculty from 1986 to 1988.

Smith has published numerous articles and reviews in such publications as "Sussex Archeological Collections," "The American Oxonian," "English Historical Review," "The Journal of Modern History," "The History Teacher," and the "Journal of Interdisciplinary History."

He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1965.

"I venture to say that if we go through history reading the word ‘know’ as ‘having carnal intercourse with,’ we are going to get some curious results."
