John Master ‘90 Speaks on
‘Red Scare, Pink Scare’

John Master ‘90 delivered an address to a packed house on the topic of "Red Scare, Pink Scare: The Politics of Deviance and the Emergence of the Gay Community, 1945-1969" on August 28 in the South Lounge of the Forum. The topic is a part of Master’s doctoral dissertation on the homophile and other gay and lesbian movements in Cold War America which he is currently completing at the University of California-Riverside.

Master also offered interested students some advice on graduate and professional schools. Unlike a college atmosphere, Master explained, graduate work does not easily facilitate socialization, so Master highly recommends working out and participating in activities where opportunity exists to meet people. He also recommends living with other people when entering a graduate school or professional school program as a means of acquiring a social base. Academically, Master recommends that students entering graduate school know what they want to accomplish before they begin so as to facilitate a "smooth track" to a degree.

After leaving Grinnell, Master took a year off and then earned an M.A. at the University of Pittsburgh. After working at Park College as a residence hall director and teaching assistant in Russian History, Master moved to California and began work on his Ph.D. in modern American history.
