James Madison Fellowship

There is information in Doug Cutchin’s office (1127 Park Street, 2nd floor) on the James Madison Fellowships, which offers $24,000 to students who want to earn a Master’s degree (MA, MAT, or M.Ed.) in history or political science, with an eventual career goal of teaching US history or government at the secondary level. Also included in the Fellowship is a month-long summer institute on the Constitution at Georgetown. A Fellowship is awarded to at least one citizen of each of the 50 states annually. Application deadline is March 1; students apply directly to the Foundation, and do not have to be nominated by Grinnell.

Meet the Members of the SEPC

Meet the members of your SEPC! Sound off:

Tyler H. St. Peter is a senior from Portland, Maine. His historical interests include twentieth century American history, ante-Bellum Republican Party politics, and the Renaissance and Reformation. Favorite history department moment: Spring picnic sophomore year with T. Mills Kelly. Favorite T.V. show: This Old House (post-Bob Vila).

Gabe Rodriguez is a senior from the tiny desert town of Lordsburg, New Mexico. While at Grinnell he has enjoyed being a part of the best department on campus and even conducted summer research under the guidance of Victoria Brown. His interests include cleaning his off-campus house, watching A&E, and spending his last precious moments with the greatest guys in the world. Upon graduation, he plans to work in Chicago before heading off to grad school.

Julian Zebot is a senior history-psychology double major. Originally from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, he takes particular interest in both American political history and soviet-era Russian social and political history. When not studying for class or the LSAT, Julian uses his involvement in student government and other extracurricular activities for purposes of procrastination. On long work-filled evenings, you can usually find him down at the pub.

John Aerni is a third-year from Cincinnati, Ohio. Someday he wants to teach your children history in high school. Outside of the classroom he spends much time running cross-country and track. Also, he is thrilled to be living in the middle of Iowa for at least four years!

Josh Blue, a junior History Major with an Elementary Education concentration, is serving his first year on the SEPC. Josh is originally from Palatine, Illinois. He is also starting his second year as one of the history department’s student secretaries. Josh is looking forward to a wonderful year on the SEPC and working for the history department.

Greta Bliss is a senior (well, junior and-a-half) history major from Lancaster, England. At the moment, she especially likes contemporary U.S. social history, but she’s starting to spread her interests to other cultures, including France (where she spent last semester) and Vietnam (she was in the seminar). Greta’s other interests include bike-riding, travel, and relaxing, and her favorite TV shows are “Roseanne” and “Dad’s Army.”

Regan Golden-McNerney is a double Major in History and Studio Art from St.Paul, Minnesota. Her main interests are in Women’s History and Architectural History. She loves history and the professors in our department! She is looking forward to a productive and hopefully not-too-stressful senior year. Favorite TV show: Martha Stewart!
