NATIONAL COMING OUT WEEK AT GRINNELL – CALENDAR OF EVENTS

National Coming Out Day was founded on October 11, 1988 by Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary to celebrate the first anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington. It has been celebrated annually on October 11th ever since. Eichberg, who died in 1995 of complications from AIDS, said, in a 1993 interview, "Most people think they don't know anyone gay or lesbian, and in fact everybody does. It is imperative that we come out and let people know who we are and disabuse them of their fears and stereotypes." And that is the point of National Coming Out Day - to let people see us, who we are, people they already like, know and respect - who happen to be gay or lesbian. That is our best weapon in the battle for our rights.
