Welcome to the Sticky Tongues' home page. Check out the player bios and tournament recaps, and if you are interested in playing with us, come to a practice: 4:20 - 6:30 on Mac Field, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. To get in contact with the team, email stickies(at)grinnell.edu.
Spring '09 was rough for the Stickies, as seven juniors were abroad. Still, Grinnell made the drive to Mardi Gras, High Tide, and Midwest Throwdown, often playing savage or nearly savage, and despite not winning many games, the semester gave underclassmen a lot of playing time and experience. Fall '09 has so far been a decent season-- the current juniors have turned the tables on the seniors and are almost all studying abroad, but this means that the first year and rookie players we gained this fall are all getting good playing experience, and current sophomores are beginning to take larger roles on the team.
Missouri Loves Company: Columbia, Mo. A cold, windy Saturday saw one win against Arkansas and losses to an intense, athletic Colorado State team and Indiana. After recovering lost calories at Waffle House, Grinnell came out strong on a slightly warmer Sunday, winning on universe to Loyola and beating Arkansas and Missouri for a final, seed-breaking record of 4-2. Other highlights of the tournament included meeting the infamous Heather "Citation" Smith, team-bonding one last time this semester before ALL the juniors go abroad, and a rash of footblocks, sick layouts, crushing zone defense, and otherwise awesome ultimate.
Hallowinona: Winona, MN. We chose Sarah Palin as our team costume theme, and dressed in powersuits, hockey jerseys, and hunting vests (at least on day one), we somehow fought our way to the finals of this tournament. Day one saw a close loss against Saint Thomas on universe, a loss to Carleton's Syzeclipse, and a close win against Marquette. Day two, we came out much more serious, and won a hard-fought game against Winona State. We beat Carleton Syzeclipse in the next game, an exhausting mixture of zone defense and long points. At the end of the day, utterly exhausted and briefly without water, we faced a strong St. Olaf team in the finals, and lost to their precision forehand hucks and speedy cutters. This was the best we'd played all semester, and we got SECOND PLACE!
No Wisconsequences: Milwaukee, WI. Day one we lost a close first game against Northwestern, were beat soundly by regional powerhouses UW-Madison and UW-Eau Claire, and won a tough game against Iowa. Day two saw a loss against UM-Duluth, a close win against College of Saint Benedict, and a loss to Wisconsin-B. All in all, the tournament offered up tough competition and proved we could hold our own against most regional teams.
Exit 69: Northfield, MN. We picked up the intensity by the end of the weekend, losing on universe in an epic game against Gustavus on Sunday.
Hucktoberfest: Whitewater, WI. Some close games, some not-so-close-games, some lost games, a won game. Sounds about right for the first away tournament.
Elephantitis VI: Grinnell, IA. I think this was the first time Grinnell had enough players to field two women's teams. One team won two games, even, an unprecedented event for us at this tournament. Won the party, though, no suprise there.
Regionals: Decorah, IA. We came in seeded 8th, left in 11th place. Beat UW-Milwaukee, lost to University of Iowa and Winona. It's been a great season!
Sectionals: Ames, IA. The snow was horizontal at times, but like the Packers at Lambeau, those scrappy Sticky Tongue Frogs beat the University of Iowa and scored a bid to REGIONALS!!!
High Tide Session II: Savannah, GA. 6-1. Let me repeat: 6 and 1. We won our first 6 games, broke seed, and lost in the quarterfinals to Amherst by two points, tying for 5th place. Good job, Stickies.
Frostbite: Springfield, MO. Wind was the the unfortunate theme of this tournament. Despite that, we did well: 4-3, losing on universe to the University of Iowa in the finals of the B bracket.
Mardi Gras XXI: Baton Rouge, LA. We brought a team of first years, three captains, one sophomore, and one alumna for a grand total of 10 girls (aka 3 subs). We went 2-4 with two close loses, everyone improved a lot, got muddy, and it was warm and there was green grass and jambalaya. Needless to say, it was awesome.
Hallowinona XIII: Winona, MN. We went as Robin Hood, and, uh, played a lot of frisbee. I don't remember our record...
Glory Days: I don't remember how we did at this one.
Hucktoberfest: Whitewater, WI. An awesome showing- we went into this tournament seeded fourteenth out of fourteen teams and ended up taking fourth place. Some good ultimate was played, and even in heavy wind against a strong Madison team we kept our spirit and intensity up.
Elephantitis: We fielded one of the largest Grinnell women's teams ever, a fun time was had by all, and the party was, as usual, fantastic.
Midnight Dream: Unofficial post-school tournament. Attended by possibly more captains and ex-captains than regular players. Came out strong, cinched 3rd place by winning a boat race.
Sectionals You win some, you lose some.
High Tide: Fifth place, whoo hoo! All the way out to Savannah, Georgia, where we got to play teams from the East Coast like Vassar, Princeton, and Amherst. We picked up with some cool Oklahoma girls and had a grand old time.
Mardi Gras XX: Baton Rouge, LA.
Midwinter Meltdown: Minneapolis, MN. Indoor women's tournament.
Frost Bite: Somewhere in Missouri. We tried to go, but then a huge storm came and closed down I-80.
Hallowinona XII: I don't remember how we did, but our costume theme was Cowboy, Ninja, Bear. See the photo section.
Glory Days: St. Louis, MO. Coed tournament over fall break.
Exit 69: Northfield, MN. We fielded a scrappy little team and had a good time.
Sectionals: 3rd Place! Next stop: Regionals, baby!
Mardi Gras: Baton Rouge, LA. 2nd Place!! Hell yeah!!!
HalloWinona XI: Winona, MN. I think the girls did pretty well. I don't really remember, though.
Yes, there were tournaments before this...but Ian Young doesn't care, and you shouldn't either.
