The B&S was founded 1874 by Jebodiah K. Brandt '76 and Ezekial J. Solam '75 as a way
of subverting the depressively capitalist nature of what Mark Twain called "The Gilded
Age." The paper had a strong sense of Congregationalist humor and was a staple of Central
Iowa comedy until 1918 when the elitist Grinnell College President was overthrown by a
group of Bolshevik sympathizers. The editors of The B&S thought about fleeing the bloody
new regime but thought better of it once they saw the brutal fate of the unabashedly
capitalist yearbook editors. For the next sixty some odd years, The B&S happily functioned
as the misinformation arm of the Communist Administration. Each month we'd post the lists
of those who were in good favor with the leaders and write stories about the ruthless
rightists at Macalester. Now in the perfect-in-every-way beginning of the 21st century,
The B&S functions as a satirical monthly newspaper that takes on all the big issues. From
the opening of a 24-hour pancake house/ gynecologist office right in the center of
downtown Grinnell to the cathartic closing of the Grinnell College History Department, The
B&S is there for inquiring yet wrong-minded Grinnellians everywhere.
