Guiding
a Student MAP: Summer
Funding

Funding
To secure funding for a summer MAP, the faculty member needs to submit
a request to the Committee on Support of Faculty Scholarship (CSFS) by
the first Friday in February. The form is available online at http://web.grinnell.edu/Dean/Forms/gb-guides.html.
This request normally includes a stipend to support the MAP student during
the summer, a stipend for the faculty member, and in some cases modest
expenses (such as research supplies) needed to carry out the project.
Four
Points
Sometimes it is difficult to know much detail about the project in early
February. Faculty members may decide that they want to direct one or two
MAPs in the summer, but it takes a longer time to select the students
whose projects they will be directing. However, as soon as the project
has been planned, at least in outline, the faculty director should communicate
with the Associate Dean, so that they can reach agreement that the project
conforms to the four points of the MAP description, as endorsed by the
Grinnell College faculty in April 2000. The faculty member can do this
either in a telephone call or by completing the on-line "four points"
form at http://web.grinnell.edu/dean/MAP/FourPointsEForm.asp.

Application
The MAP is a highly advanced level of Independent Study. When carried
out in the summer, it usually carries the designator of 399 Directed Summer
Research. To apply for the MAP credits, the student submits an application
for Independent Study. This application is available from the Registrar's
Office, including an online printable form at http://www.grinnell.edu/offices/registrar/documents/indstudy.pdf.
For Independent Study in the summer, the Registrar's deadline is the second
Monday in June. As you can see, however, by that date it is too late to
secure funding for a project, so the approval process for a MAP really
needs to begin much earlier in the spring.
Housing
The standard ten-week period for a summer MAP begins with the week of
Memorial Day and ends in early August. MAP students are eligible to rent
college-owned housing either for that ten-week period, or for a six-week
period during the first half or second half of the summer. Initial deposits
and rent can automatically be deducted from MAP stipend payments. To accommodate
building maintenance needs, the earliest date for students to move into
the college-owned housing will be Memorial Day, and it will not be possible
to remain any later than the first full week of August. Students interested
in learning more about this opportunity should contact Steve Larson, Director
of Residence Life.
Payment
If the MAP student has not previously been employed by the college, the
student needs to complete employment forms at the Cashier's Office (Mears
3rd floor). The student will need either a passport or a driver's license
and social security card. It is not possible to receive a paycheck without
filing these employment forms. Student paychecks are issued throughout
the summer on alternate Fridays, beginning in early June and ending in
early August. The faculty stipend is added to the faculty member's salary
after completing a MAP
Report at the end of the summer.
