The one overriding item of business of the Midwest Conference during
1999/2000 was to pass on two readings the proposal that follows. To become conference policy, it must now
pass faculty votes at two-thirds of the conference institutions. I will ask Grinnell’s faculty to discuss and
vote on the proposal at the first regular faculty meeting in the fall. I urge you to read the proposal and direct any
questions to me.
Midwest Conference proposal on the scheduling of sports competitions
Proposal Preamble
The purpose of this proposal is to establish equitable scheduling of intercollegiate athletic competition without compromising academic achievement.
The conference has attempted to set limits equitably among all sports, and to stay within approximately 80-90% of NCAA limits. Acceptance of this proposal carries a moratorium on requests for schedule changes of any kind to current MWC regular season and tournament schedules until the beginning of the 2005-06 school year. Schedule concerns have consumed a disproportionate amount of the conference’s attention. This proposal will allow greater opportunity for discussion of more substantive issues such as gender equity in sports, athletic eligibility requirements, conference organization, etc.
Comprehensive Schedule Proposal
This proposal consists of three parts:
Part 1: Setting limits on varsity competition
Part 2: All JV schedules are unchanged.
Part 3: Acceptance of this proposal carries with it a moratorium on requests for changes of any kind, to include contests and practice opportunities until the beginning of the school year 2005-2006.
