Institutional Biosafety Committee

Grinnell’s IBC holds a multifaceted purview.  First, the IBC oversees all research proposals involving infectious biological agents, recombinant DNA, radioactive materials and select biological agents (as classified by the CDC).  Additionally, the IBC develops emergency plans for biohazards and supplies consultation with researchers on biosafety issues.  Any faculty, staff or student conducting research that includes biological hazards needs to submit a proposal of the research to the IBC Chair before submitting that proposal to the college’s IRB or IACUC.  Please allow an additional 14 days for IBC review.  We encourage electronic submission of the proposals (send to ibc@grinnell.edu).  Researchers with approval need to submit a protocol modification form to the IBC for significant modifications to research proposals (either procedures or subject populations).
