Subject: Change in Application Deadline for Independent Study.
Last year the Curriculum Committee and the Divisions discussed deadlines for Independent Study applications. Following those discussions, and in the spirit of the advising proposal adopted by the faculty, the Curriculum Committee decided to recommend that independent study applications be developed well in advance of the semester in which students plan to take the courses. In order both to encourage more thoughtful planning time for students and faculty in developing independent study projects and to allow the College adequate time to process applications, the Curriculum Committee has adopted the following procedure for Independent Study beginning in Spring 2001 preregistration for Fall 2001:
Applications for Independent Study will be due during the semester prior to that in which the courses are to be taken.* Specifically, applications for 297, 387, and 397 independent study are due in the Registrar's Office two school days after the end of the preregistration period of each semester. During preregistration, students should include independent study, approved by the faculty sponsor, on their preregistration cards. If the Dean's Office approves the independent study proposal, the independent will appear on the final class schedule that each student receives before registration day for the next semester. Students who are in GIL, in an off-campus study program, on a medical leave, on personal leave, readmitted to the College, or continuing an independent study from the previous semester or summer will have until the end of the first full week of each semester to complete and turn in their Independent Study applications to the Registrar's Office.
