Minutes
Curriculum Committee
December 2, 2003
Members: James Swartz (Chair), Gerald Adams, Diane Robertson, Tyler Roberts, Mark Montgomery, Devan McGranahan, Lilly Radoshevich, and Elizabeth Clark.
1. The minutes
of the 11/18/03 meeting were approved.
2. The Dean reviewed
the history of the formation of MAPs and also reviewed for the committee the
compensation for MAPs to date. He went on to suggest that the committee should
change direction and look at the role of independents in the curriculum and
then look at the question of compensation. Independent study varies in content,
varies with respect to faculty involvement, and varies in credit. We should
focus first on the quality questions regarding independents. Expectations for
both faculty and students have changed over the years and in light of MAPs we
need to do an assessment of all independent study. How much do we value independents
in terms of all the other demands on faculty time? What are the goals of independents
in comparison to MAPs.? How much time does the faculty wish to spend on independents?
It was decided that we would survey the faculty and continue our discussion
of option #4.
3. The faculty
members of the committee reviewed the Internship Applications for spring 2004.
