1. The minutes from the November 6, 2001
meeting were approved.
2. An East Asian Studies Concentration to
replace the current Chinese Studies Concentration was approved.
3. The committee reviewed, modified, and
approved a question that will be sent to the class of 2001 this
fall regarding their participation in and evaluation of MAPs/capstone
projects. Below are the changes:
1) While at Grinnell, did you do a MAP/Capstone or other culminating academic experience?
a) If you answered "yes," briefly describe what you did. Indicate how distinctive you found this experience. Could you tell us what effect this experience has had on you, in terms of your Grinnell education or what you have done since graduation?
b) If you answered "no," please
explain why a culminating academic experience was not part of
your program at Grinnell.
4. The committee reviewed a one-page summary
on MAPs to be distributed to faculty and students as background
information for a discussion of MAPs to be done early in the spring
of next year.
5. The committee agreed that the divisional
representatives on the committee, both student and faculty, will
meet with their respective divisional chair to discuss the forth
coming discussion of MAPS. The committee also agreed that each
divisional representative would provide a brief written summary
of the emerging themes from the divisional meeting. The student
will also prepare a written summary of their discussion of MAPs.
6. The committee agree that the following
question will be used to frame the forth coming discussion regarding
MAPs:
a. The motivation for MAPs was to create
and support an upper level integrating experience for our students.
Has our experience with MAPS indicated that it serves this role?
b. Should MAPs become an established part
of the Grinnell curriculum in the same way as OCS and concentrations?
Paula Smith agreed to assemble a single document that will include
a preface outlining our charge from Executive Council, the questions
to frame the discussions, that the fact sheet. All the documents
referenced in the fact sheet will be posted on the MAP web site.
