November 18, 2003
Members: Gerald Adams, Diane Robertson, Andy Hamilton, Tyler Roberts, Mark Montgomery, Devan McGranahan, Lilly Radoshevich, and Elizabeth Clark. Guest: Helen Scott
1. The minutes
of 11/04/03 were approved.
2. Report from SCC: The SCC feels that faculty should be compensated for Independents.
The SCC feels that the compensation should be monetary and not course release.
They had a question about the relationship between faculty compensation and
teaching. The chair of the faculty said that the executive council is working
on a way to standardize a review and evaluation process of teaching so that
it can be linked to faculty compensation.
Report from Social
Studies: Andy says that the division is where the humanities division is with
respect to favoring options 3 and 4. Andy reported that there is no strong passion
within the division for a single option.
Report from Humanities:
Tyler reported that his division has concluded their discussion on compensation.
Both the humanities and social studies divisions recognize that the science faculty has a bigger burden regarding summer research with students.
The committee felt that at some point we will have to discuss the impact on the curriculum of any decision we make regarding compensation of independent study.
The committee agreed to set aside our next meeting as a working session to discuss in detail how option #4 might work in practice.
Option #4: Compensate all MAPs and Independents but try to minimize the adverse effect on the curriculum by imposing limits on the number of course release credits that can be accumulated per academic year and/or on how these credits may be used.
This option has the advantage of compensating a wider range of independent work than option #3. For some faculty, though, it might place limits on how many compensated independents/MAPs they can do. Examples of possible limits are given below:
Limits on the number of course credits that can be accumulated per academic year
- e.g. 1/2 course credit
Limits on how the course credits may be used:
- e.g. only one course release every 3 years/faculty member
- e.g. only used to extend a sabbatical
