Minutes
Curriculum Committee
Tuesday, November 5, 2002
Members: James
Swartz (Chair), Gerald Adams, Diane Robertson, Andy Hamilton, Jerry Lalonde,
Courtney Sloger, and Jake Omvig. Guest: Marci Sortor
Agenda:
1. The minutes
from the 10/08/02 meeting were approved.
2. The committee
will review Internship applications for Spring 2003 on November 19th.
3. Application
Deadlines for Summer MAP's. The humanties division has not had time to discuss
the proposal. The science division can live with the two part application provided
that the second deadline be the second Monday in June. The social studies division
is comfortable with the two part application process. The committee tabled this
discussion until we hear from the humanities division.
4. The discussion
of two two-credits MAPs was revisited. Some members of the science division
would like to be able to offer a two credit independent that would be meet all
the expectations of a MAP to be followed by a two credit MAP. The social studies
division was also concerned about the ability to offer a two credit MAP followed
by a four credit MAP. Their concern was more general than specific. Some may
have been concerned about teaching credit (the committee will be considering
teaching credit for all types of independents this year). The Dean and Associate
Dean agreed to bring a proposal to the committee for consideration that would
give faculty a mechanism to petition the Dean to be allowed to conduct a two
credit independent that would meet the expectations of a MAP to be followed
by a two credit MAP. The proposal would be made as a package (for example, two
chapters of a book) and not as individual segments (for example, a collection
of short stories).
5. The committee and the divisions have discussed the 10-credit limit with respect to MIP299s and MAP 399s. From all the discussions the committee has decided for now that MIP 299s and MAP 499s should be excluded from the 10-credit limit and that the committee will, in two years, evaluate how many students come up against the 10-credit limitation.
10-Credit Limitation:
A student may count no more than 10 credits of independent study earned in any
one department in Guided Reading 297, Individual Reading 387, and Independent
Project 397 toward satisfaction of graduation requirements. Credits earned in
"Plus-2" projects, internship study, MIP 299, MAP 499 or Directed
Summer Research 399 are not included in this 10-credit limit.
6. The instructions
for course proposal changes were approved with one modification.
