Minutes
Curriculum Committee
4:15 p.m., Tuesday, September 25, 2001
PDR F

Members: James Swartz (Chair), Gerald Adams, Gail Bonath, Pablo Silva, Bob Grey, and Jerry Lalonde.
Guest: Paula smith

Agenda:

1. The minutes from the 9/11/01 meeting were approved.

2. Two additional agenda items were added to the current list of items.

a. Evaluation of questionable summer internships, the internships we approved but did not approve the credits attached to them.
b. Report the number of internships, guided readings, plus-2's, and independent studies from 1991 to the present.

3. Jim reviewed for the committee the recent history of the development of MAPs. Paula outlined for the committee five elements for the assessment of the MAPs. She made the point that we will not be doing a learning assessment but a program assessment. She has gathered a lot of data on the number of MAPs regarding the number of faculty, the number of students etc. that she will provide the committee for our next meeting. She noted that a number of models have emerged for MAPs which satisfy all four features which are common to all MAPs. The Dean reminded the committee that the Executive Council wants the Curriculum Committee to deal only with the assessment of MAPs and not other forms of independent study at this time. It was pointed out that information on the outcomes of MAPs would be useful in understanding more about the nature of MAPs but would not be very helpful in the assessment of MAPs. Paula will return in two weeks with more information for the committee to begin its assessment of MAPs.
