Minutes
Curriculum Committee
4:15 p.m., Tuesday, September 5, 2000
Fell House Conference Room

Members: James Swartz (Chair), Gerald Adams, Mark Schneider, Pablo Silva, George Carroll, and Elizabeth Dobbs.

1. The committee discussed the procedure to be followed with respect to discontinuing the major in American Studies and replacing it with an American Studies Concentration. George Barlow will be invited to each divisional meeting as the representative of the new concentration. Since there are no science courses in either the major or the concentration, the Science Division does not need to act on either proposal. After the divisions have acted on each proposal it will be forwarded to the curriculum committee for further discussion. If the divisions and the curriculum committee support the recommendations, they will be forwarded to the full faculty for approval. It was noted that the recommendation for dropping the major and replacing it with a concentration comes from the current members of the American Studies department.

2. The Committee reviewed the policy and process issues that will be discussed this year:

The Committee will begin with discussion of the course proposal process.
