Minutes
Curriculum Committee
February 28, 2007
Members: James Swartz (Chair), Gerald Adams, Eliza Willis, Erin Hurley, Lee Sharpe, Dan Reynolds, Jason Cook, Alexandra Kieffer, and Michael Billups.
1. The minutes of the 021307 meeting were approved.
2. Departmental MAP assessment: Humanities
If publication and public presentation are a measure then the goal is not being met.
Vetting is done by individual faculty
Several departments said the demands cannot be met.
Only two departments have used their MAP credit
There is little or no relationship between MAP projects and individual faculty research
At the end of the presentation the committee saw several issues that may need further discussion:
a. How to maintain quality.
b. Academic year vs. Summer MAP credit for faculty.
c. Limit on the number of MAPs any student may do.
d. Define research with respect to MAP projects.
3. Proposal for a new concentration: Policy Studies. TABLED
4. Proposed course changes:
a. Drop SPAN 221 and add it to the Latin American Studies Concentration as LAS 111. APPROVED
b. Changes in the Latin American Concentration. APPROVED
c. Changes in the English Major: adding “At least one four credit course with a Humanities (HUM) designation.” APPROVED
d. GWS 495: repeat once for credit. DENIED on the grounds that the nature of the course is not consistence with the idea of repeating it and that permission should rest with the concentration committee and not with the chair of the concentration. [Note: the Registrar contacted the chair of the concentration regarding the course proposal and the chair has elected to withdraw the proposal.]
