Curriculum Committee
February 13, 2007
Members: James Swartz (Chair), Gerald Adams, Eliza Willis, Erin Hurley, Lee Sharpe, Dan Reynolds, Jason Cook, Alexandra Kieffer.
1. The minutes of the 013007 meeting were approved.
2. The committee did not consider it advisable to make a general judgment concerning whether to allow credit for such service learning courses with attached seminars. The student in question can pursue this through an appeal to the Committee on Academic Standing as an exception to College policy.
3. The committee briefly discussed problem of part-time term faculty who teach a special topics course more then twice.
4. Departmental MAP assessments:
a. Science
Summer MAPs revolve around the research interest of the faculty
Vetting are by a departmental process but during the academic year vetting is by individual faculty.
The division is happy with the MAPs. They have been doing them for 50 years.
For the most part demands for MAPs have been met
Time: 40 hrs/week in the summer on MAPs. During the academic year the time will vary greatly.
Independent Study has declined with MAPs. One department says they use it like a guiding reading.
MAP credits will be cashed in for sabbatical leavesb. Social Studies
Departments said, for the most part, that the goals of MAPs are being met.
Vetting is done by individual faculty.
Two departments said the demands cannot be met.
The major barriers are time and resources
Time varies from 2 to 6 hrs per week during the academic year. In the summer it can be as much as 40 hrs per week.
One department said they use independent study like guiding reading.
2/3 of the departments are not using faculty research in MAPs.
Independent study has decreased since MAPs were developed.
Some departments say they need more funding in order to do MAPs
