Fell House Conference Room

Members: Gerald Adams, Mark Schneider, Pablo Silva, Josh Blue (01-53), Joseph Nelson (09-78), and George Carroll (03-08).

1. The minutes from the 11/28/00 meeting were approved.

2. Course proposals:

a. THE 303-Catalog description change--approved
b. THE 304-Catalog description change-approved

3. Continuing agenda issues:

a. In light of MAP, what is the role of independent study, guided reading, and plus-2's ?
The committee briefly discussed the idea of going ahead with better catalog descriptions of independents, individual reading .and guided reading for the catalog. The committee decided that at our next meeting we would work on what we need from the Social Studies and Humanities Divisions regarding an appropriate title for the type of course work they would oversee during the summer.
b. Course proposal process and catalog revision process? We will review the work done by this committee at our next meeting. After that discussion the Registrar will draft a set of guidelines and procedures that will be reviewed by the committee. Once the committee has approved a set of guidelines and procedures it will be passed to the divisions for review and approval. The committee felt that if we adopt the above described process for setting new guidelines and procedures for departmental approval of course changes there would be no need to send it to the Faculty for approval.
c. Summer Internships and the separation of credit. The Dean and the Registrar have recently met with the Director of CDO to review the procedures that will be set in place this summer to separate summer internships from credit. The procedure for approval for an internship for the summer will be the same as it has been in the past. But now if students want credit they will need a faculty sponsor and a learning contract that will be reviewed and approved by the Dean.
d. Proposal for lining up first-year students for registration in the fall. This is a plan to help deal with crowd control at the start of registration each fall.
e. A review of the Course Proposal Form. The committee will need to review the course approval form in light of changes made in the procedure for approval of course changes.
f. Why do we cross-list courses? Why is MAT 115 cross-listed as SST 115?
g. A timeline for catalog production. The Registrar would like to spread out the timeline for catalog production so that more work is done in the fall and less is done in the spring in order to reduce the burden placed on so many at the end of the school year. In addition, we could move up the catalog production to late spring or early summer.
h. A proposal for a class period MW class time from 8:00 - 9:50 a.m. This was an experimental class period that has been used by a few professors which the committee should now review.
