Attending: Doug Caulkins, Marci Sortor, Jean Ketter, Jon Chenette, Tyler Roberts, Bill Francis, Christopher McKee, Helen Scott, Rebecca Stuhr, Lee Sharpe, Bob Grey, John Kalkbrenner

Next Meeting: Wednesday, December 13, Library Conference Room
Agenda: Curricular Development

Discussion of document to send to library planning committee:
3. ISC recommends that assigned carrel space for students be incorporated into the library plan so that the students can work on advanced independent projects.

2. ISC recommends that we continue to house IMTSs in the same building as the faculty they serve as much as possible. We believe that a meeting space is appropriate. This meeting space could be a shared space that houses centralized equipment.

5. How can we get response to this issue? The distinct functions of the campus center and library, while complementary, are still very different. The planning committee should take these differences into consideration.

6. ISC believes that technology, while an important part of the library, should be as seamless as possible.

  • Immediate impact of library should be of traditional library. Full range of resources and materials should be evident.
  • The appearance of the library should mirror the purpose: format, resources (including people)

Rebecca will edit the document and send it to Christopher McKee (for planning committee) and to the ISC.

Classroom use discussion:

It is essential to have the input of the Registrar in renovating and creating classrooms.

Departmental classrooms: Rooms designed for a specific discipline may be unsuitable for other departments' use.

Faculty need to be clear on pedagogical needs and have rooms assigned on that basis. Allow for flexibility in scheduling as some rooms, while matching a generic description, may not be suitable in other ways.

The ISC recommends that an inventory of rooms be taken (features, capacity, etc.) so that faculty can request what they need and have rooms assigned accordingly. The inventory should be available on the web. Could an electronic form be useful?

The ISC would like the College to explore creating a database/checksheet with classroom formats, and assign rooms to faculty based on needs as well as class size. Faculty would submit needs as well as requested classroom.
Recommendation for database:
Class size
Faculty room preference
Pedagogical needs
Alternate rooms for flexibility/negotiation

Rebecca will edit document and distribute to committee, Jim Swartz, and Gerry Adams.

Discussion of posting minutes on web. Terri will link minutes to Dean's site.

Discussion of Curricular Development grant applications:

How is "materials" defined? Does this committee purchase books? Books are typically purchased through the library.

Adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Terri Phipps
