Instructional Support Committee

Minutes of October 25, 2000
Noon
Faculty House

Attending: Rebecca Stuhr, Lee Sharpe, Jean Ketter, Vin Shende, Jon Chenette, John Kalkbrenner, Christopher McKee, Bob Grey, Marci Sortor, Bill Francis

Next meeting: Tuesday, Nov. 14 in Science 1021
Meeting with Carol Wedge, Shipley and Bullfinch, to discuss wants/needs in a new library.

We will not meet on November 8 at noon.

Future meeting dates are Nov. 22 and Dec. 6.
Hold Dec. 13 and 20 in case the committee needs to meet.

Discussion of Master Plan priorities:
· The Welcome Center has the highest priority at this time. Any new buildings beyond that will need to wait until after a new energy center is built.
· There is a lot of planning in process, but nothing is definite.

Library discussion:
· Emery Library looks more like a computer center than a library. Students and faculty at Emery are very happy with that atmosphere, but is that the atmosphere that Grinnell wants to present?
· Suggestion of discussion rooms at the library for group projects. The function of such rooms should be appropriate for use at a library. Rooms could be used for special purposes rather than as regular scheduled classrooms to avoid disruption of the library during class change times.
· It would be convenient to have a room to view prints and slides.
· Need a multimedia creation center-computer(s) with high-end capabilities.
-Currently two curriculum libraries in Steiner, one of which has a high-end computer for student use (mainly education students).
-Need video-capture equipment either at library or at Steiner.
· Should curriculum libraries be incorporated into main library? Science Division needs quick access to the Science Library. The Science Phase II plan indicates the Science Library will stay in the Science building.
- The Black Library and East Asian collection will be held at the main library.
-Christopher will arrange a separate meeting with Jean Ketter and Carol Wedge to discuss curriculum libraries.
· AV collection in ARH: Should the holdings be centralized? The materials are language-based only.
-Possibly centralize list of holdings in ARH with the library catalog, but house the materials in ARH. Similar to Science Library holdings.
· Suggestion to include a snack bar/coffee house in the library.

Discussion of classes during the noon hour: Holding classes during this hour would make it nearly impossible for faculty groups or student groups to meet as they do now at that time.

Is this committee going to recommend something to Jim Swartz regarding classroom use?

The purpose of flexibility in scheduling classrooms: An unscheduled classroom is not necessarily an unused classroom because rooms are often used during non-class times for group discussions and faculty-student consultation.

Rebecca and Terri will create a document outlining comments from the classroom tour.

Faculty prefer tables and chairs over tablet arm chairs. It is easier for students to have all their materials readily accessible.

Suggestion to revamp some of the existing classrooms to make them more useful. In particular, ARH 130 and Carnegie 313 and 314. Carnegie 313 could seat 20-25 given different furnishings.

Possibly take out some walls in ARH to make classrooms larger (ARH 130, in particular).

Discussion of locking up classrooms/buildings at night. This is an issue of security. Future agenda item: Invite Steve Briscoe to one of our meetings to discuss this issue.

John addressed the committee concerning technology planning.
· The planning committee would like two members from ISC to sit on the committee. At this time their role is to review and comment.
-Jon Chenette and Lee Sharpe have agreed to join the planning committee.
· The committee will consist of faculty and senior administration only during the first stages of planning. Bob Musser (trustee) may also join the committee.
· Various alumni who work in the technology field are scheduled to visit campus. They will make recommendations for technology.
· Students are not involved in the long-range planning level as they will not have a vested interest in the outcome.
· There are three levels of technology planning:
1. Long-range planning
2. Implementation
3. Operational for mature systems (Datetel, for example).

Adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Terri Phipps
