Question regarding Stone Tools proposal
from Technology Studies: ISC will fund this year, and will suggest
to Technology Studies and Anthropology that they incorporate
the cost into their budgets in future years. Rebecca will send
a note to Doug Caulkins approving the proposal and inform him
of the budget suggestion.
Tour of classrooms:
Jerry was pleased that the College has
invited him to participate in discussions of classroom planning.
Bucksbaum 243: Holds 25. Currently used
50%
Basically a good classroom. Good windows, blackboard, nice tables
and chairs. However, chairs lining room limit flexibility. Room
is currently booked for more students that the room can comfortably
hold.
Goodnow 105: Holds 20+ Currently used over
80%
Not a good room. Long and narrow. Difficult to hold discussions.
Limited flexibility of seating.
Steiner 107: Holds 15-17
Jerry is proposing to build up floor to one level. Add tables
and chairs. Room currently has fixed, tiered seating. High noise
level.
Steiner 106: Holds 30/ listed as holding
40.
Currently used over 60%. Has more space between tables than ST107.
Carnegie 313: Holds 18
Good size. Some technology available (overhead, TV/VCR). Blackboard.
No windows. Paint and furniture would make this a more desirable
room.
Departments "settle" for rooms that may not be quite
suitable or inviting if they are more or less dedicated to them.
Ownership dictates tolerance.
College needs to engage faculty in planning
room renovations.
ARH 1st floor: odd angled rooms. Good windows.
Too many chairs.
2nd floor: maximum seating is 15 per classroom.
3rd floor: most versatile rooms in building.
Introductory languages courses are too
large for language seminar rooms.
ARH 130: Holds 26
Angled wall. High noise level.
If class limit is 15, this room is fine. Too many chairs.
Deficit/Competition for specific size rooms at certain peak times
of the day.
Faculty are requesting specific rooms rather than a type of room.
Faculty are hesitant to switch to a different building.
Faculty want a classroom with good lighting,
well-equipped with technology, and is near their office. College
can't accommodate those criteria.
College needs more rooms that hold 30 comfortably.
There are plenty of rooms that hold 15.
Science 0331: seats 30
Lots of blackboards. Table and chairs. Equipped with technology.
High noise level.
Science 2424/2428
Good windows. Good blackboards. Used much more than SC0331.
Some departments are "homeless."
Sciences have specific rooms as do languages and fine arts. Other
departments get what is left.
Need to either build more shared spaces
and build kinship between nomadic departments, or build more
specific departmental rooms to build ownership and tolerance.
If room has specialized equipment for class
that needs to be available and can't be booked, it should be
labeled a lab.
