Architects are finishing the
conceptual design phase. They have tested the square footage
required by users against the concept design as well as the square
footage of the lot.
Designs shown were conceptual,
not actual.
Library design has 94,000 gross
sq feet, a 50% increase over current space.
ITS design has 35,000 gross sq feet.
Library design contains four
floors, stepping up from one main floor to a small fourth floor.
The campus center design contains three floors. There is a shared
open space between the buildings and service corridors connecting
the two. Buildings will be surrounded by 12' loggias that will
connect the two spaces.
Each building will have its own
identity.
The library entrance is three
feet above street level. This rise could become integrated seating.
The designers do not want to
just have mass, but want the buildings to fit into the campus
landscape.
The buildings will have glass
along the perimeter to allow visual access from the street and
from the buildings and open spaces, with the idea that this would
draw people into the area both day and night. For example, students
could be studying in the library and still see events taking
place at the campus center.
Conceptual design of library:
Staff elevator and two public
elevators
Staff presence on all floors
Basement: Storage - connects
the two buildings
Media production studio
Crafts workshop
Expansion space
Server and/or phone switch
First floor: Entry point
Circulation desk
Government documents
Browsing room
ITS media/team areas
Second floor: General collection
Bound periodicals
Perimeter is user space
Offices
Reader space (individual and group)
Third floor: Technical staff
offices
Faculty study space
User space
AV/listening media
General collection
Fourth floor: Mechanical rooms
Reception space
Conservation
Iowa room
Access to tower
Special collections
Need a variety of study/seating
spaces.
Library focus is academic, campus
center is more social.
Campus is currently age-defined.
The entrance needs to welcome townspeople as well as campus.
Need to address parking issue.
It is a big concern - visitor as well as campus.
Dean Swartz asked whether the
Help Desk and Reference Desk should be near each other. Help
Desk is currently shown in the service area in the campus center
(by Service Bureau and Post Office).
