Discussion of summer workshop proposals

  • Grant writing workshop

The possibility of introducing a summer workshop on grant writing was discussed. Requirements for grant writing can vary widely between disciplines, as well as focusing on scholarship or pedagogy, making it difficult to imagine how a workshop can cover everything. There are standards, though, that carry across all disciplines, such as how to write effectively in order to sell an idea. The Grants Office is very accessible. Karen Wiese and Richard Cleaver provide considerable support and guidance, regularly meeting with faculty one-on-one. The Associate Dean will confer with the Grants Office and report back to ISC.

  • Science Learning Center

Peer mentoring is growing across disciplines. ISC requests that the description of the workshop should be modified to make clear that it is open to faculty beyond the sciences. This includes a request to change the title to something like "Peer Mentoring." Approved contingent on these changes.

  • All Things Food

Interested faculty will meet in the spring to determine the workshop agenda. Approved.

  • Images and Inquiry: Incorporating Images into Your Teaching

As proposed, this workshop will meet formally for two days, followed by individual appointments. Workshops must run a minimum of three half-days in order for participants to receive a stipend. ISC requests a wrap-up session following the individual appointments that will allow faculty to share their works in progress. Approved, contingent on this change.

  • Visual Culture Across the Disciplines – proposal withdrawn
  • The Concept of Power (HHMI)

ISC is intrigued by the intersection of ideas across campus, but suggests that the description of this workshop is too ambitious for three half-days. It is not clear what the workshop leaders expect participants to achieve. The Committee requests that the leaders re-submit a more focused description. Leslie will contact the leaders and circulate a revised description to ISC for email approval.

  • Center for Humanities

Leslie will contact the leader for a revised description indicating what impact this workshop will have on teaching. Approved contingent on this change.

Consideration of Curricular Development proposals:

  • Eric Carter (Health Geography)

Approved at $350 as per ISC guidelines ($250 transportation; $100 food/lodging)

Respectfully submitted,
Terri Phipps
