Minutes of April 27 approved.

Discussion of Curricular Development Proposals:

  • Carter and Guenther presented information related to their proposal currently under consideration. ISC had expressed concerns with the scope of the project given the length of time proposed for completion. The scale of the project is much smaller than previously thought, incorporating samples of materials rather than creating a comprehensive database. The research guide created could be used by others in the field, as well as provide a model for other disciplines.

Carter and Guenther left the meeting. After a long discussion, ISC approved the project, noting that the faculty have requested maximum funding. Further work on the project may not be funded.

  • HIS: Field trip to opera in Chicago, Fall 2009. This opera is a key component of the syllabus. ISC expressed concerns over student safety since faculty members would be driving to Chicago, watching the opera, and then driving back to Grinnell. Approval to fund the trip this time. Future trips should come from the departmental budget as a regularly occurring event. ISC will fund at a higher level so that a driver and small bus can be used.

Election of Chair : Karen Shuman was unanimously elected as Chair for 2009-2010.

Discussion of potential budget cuts for Library subscriptions : This discussion has been tabled until the fall, and will focus on fiscal years 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Respectfully submitted,
