Discussion of utilization of technology in instruction, Curricular Technologist Joseph Kerkman

Joseph provided examples in which technology is currently being used, or can be used, in a classroom setting. Examples included scanned postcards tied to a course in music, an illustration of a 3-D printer (zPrint 450) being purchased with HHMI funds, and the Second Life website that allows users to visit famous locations (the Sistine Chapel, for example) and interact with other users.

Joseph also gave some helpful hints on using technology in the classroom, including

  • use software regularly so that you are comfortable with it
  • pre-plan and test, make sure the technology works where you need it before you need it
  • use on-the-ground support: CTSs, AV support and ITS

Update on summer workshops

ISC members agreed that workshops should have a minimum of eight regular teaching faculty participating in order for a workshop to be held. The Associate Dean will consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis. The Committee also discussed limiting the number of workshops part-term and term faculty could participate in each summer.
