Curricular Development proposals:

Kabir Festival ($800): General support for the festival does not fit into ISC guidelines. However, the committee discussed how the festival will be utilized as a required event for several class periods so it was agreed to fund the level of the event up to the amount for about five classroom visitors. Leslie will instruct the faculty member to contact interested faculty who should encourage their students to participate in the festival.

Foreign language speech contest field trip: Only a small number of students could potentially qualify for this trip and it is not a required class component. Therefore, this proposal does not fit into the field trip guidelines. ISC has denied the request. Leslie will direct faculty member to more appropriate sources of funding, possibly in student affairs.

Foreign language field trip to Iowa City : ISC has denied this request. Leslie will meet with the faculty member to discuss the sorts of activities that ISC will support and what is expected to be funded at the departmental level.

Summer Workshop proposals:

The Committee should keep in mind when considering workshop approval:

  • Stage of development
  • Broad appeal
  • Relation to people's training

The Committee expressed concerns with two of the proposals. Leslie will take these concerns to the faculty who wrote the proposals. Final decisions on workshop offerings have not been made.

Respectfully submitted,
Terri Phipps
