2005-2006 ISC report: No comments or revisions from the Committee.

ISC Handbook: One of last year's decisions was to increase funding for expenses rather than paying stipends.

Curricular Development Guidelines:

  • Proposals for interdisciplinary curricular development will be sent to the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies for review by the Advisory Board.
  • Deadlines have been made generic dates (ex.: First Monday following break). Exceptions are deadlines not determined by ISC (CSFS).
  • Course-Related Field Trip section: Total funding (meals, travel, miscellaneous expenses) should not exceed $1500, approximately $25 per student. Students should expect to pay expenses beyond the $25 cap.
  • Guidelines are approved with these revisions.

    Requests for Funding:

  • Interdisciplinary Common Ground lunches $3000
  • CFFLS $1650
  • STaLG $990
  • Early Career Faculty Group $1200

    All approved as requested

LibQual Survey: This survey will help determine what works well in the Library, as well as what areas need improvement. The survey is web-based and will take 20-25 minutes to complete. Richard will check to see if a partially-completed survey can be saved and finished later, and also ask about institutional confidentiality. Analysis is completed by the national organization, and can be broken down by demographics: faculty, staff, student; by division, etc. Registration fee of $2500 is required in September in order to complete the survey in the spring. The survey will be sent to all members of the campus community. The survey could be repeated in three years to assess progress. The Library SEPC will assist with encouraging student response.

    ISC supports performing this survey.

Copyright, Fair Use, e-Reserve FAQ: Jon distributed a draft document outlining frequently asked questions regarding copying, course reserves, and e-reserves. The College's copyright guidelines follow standards set by the ALA and ARL. Jon will present the document at the September 18 faculty meeting. Committee members should have comments and feedback to him by September 12.

The Library is updating the copyright information on their web page.

Some members would like more support for academic freedom, and suggest that the College should be more bold and liberal rather than limiting faculty members' options.
There are legal and financial issues surrounding the copyright issue.

Academic authors could help address this issue in the future by retaining some rights to their work rather than transferring them all to the publisher. In the meantime, though, their work is governed by copy rights held by publishers.

Jon requested one member from ISC to sit on the copyright Task Force. That representative will be named later, and Cecilia, as Chair of ISC, will serve in the interim. Jon will forward a list of current members to the committee.

SACC and SGA student representatives: These groups have not met this semester. Cecilia will contact them about appointing representatives to the committee.

    Update on ITS summer changes:

  • ITS has moved to the Forum. There is still some work to do. ITS is working with FM to complete the move.
  • Former Grill space is being reconfigured as the Creative Computing Lab. ITS hopes to have this space open for Family Weekend.
  • Hours: The current plan is to mirror Burling's hours, however, there is not enough staff yet to cover that many hours. Higher-skilled student workers are needed.
  • The CCL has both wired and wireless access, booths, a bar-height table for laptop use, and a training room.
  • The Help Desk is housed in the Forum. This is the first time in 15 years that ITS staff have been housed this close to a computer lab.
  • Next meeting:
    September 20

    Respectfully submitted,
    Terri Phipps
