Instructional Support Committee

Minutes of November 29, 2006
Noon
Faculty House

Attending: Anatoly Vishevsky, Cecilia Knight, Chris Johnson (SGA), Richard Fyffe, Dan Reynolds, Bill Francis, Keri Kornelson, Terri Phipps

Minutes of last meeting approved.

Software Applications Specialist update: Interviews have been completed. An offer should be made by the end of the week.

Copyright Taskforce update: Draft statement of principles is complete and has been sent to the full committee. The draft is laid out in three sections: Principles, The Law, and Tools to Use. Faculty have some leeway in their judgment. Academic Support Assistants will not be held liable for faculty decisions in terms of copyright compliance.

A draft Table of Contents and outline will be brought to ISC for feedback.

EKI lunch update: Eight lunches have been held so far and have been well attended. Facilitators of these lunches are required to submit a report to the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies. ISC members request a report from Marci Sortor regarding the directions the discussions are taking; what may or will be implemented; and what impact these outcomes will have on the curriculum.

Licensed Digital Collections update:

  • More materials are becoming available electronically. Receiving these materials in print as well is time, expense, labor, and space intensive. Electronic journals do require funds and staff time to process.
  • Questions to consider: What is the College responsible for archiving? How long will electronic materials be available (technologically compatible, stability of publisher, etc.)? Companies may choose not to keep certain materials available.
  • ISC members received a draft "Considerations" document in their agenda packets. This document addressed some points to consider when deciding between electronic and print access, including completeness of online materials (does it include all figures, letters, etc.); timeliness; reliability (is there a back-up server); continued access (Portico is one possible solution).
  • The Library is developing a strategy to help alleviate space issues for print materials, including moving some to off-site storage.
  • It will take a long time to realize savings of e-materials over print.
  • Other entities are storing paper journals available on JStor.

Portico: This is an electronic archiving service that might serve as a backup to the College's normal subscriptions. Materials stored here can be accessed only as a last resort. If we join before Dec. 31, the annual fee would be ca. $5000 for five years rising to $6700 annually after that. If we join in 2007 the annual fee would be ca. $6000 for five years, and $6700 annually after that. Peers are beginning to join.

The College needs to be sensitive to disciplinary concerns. For instance, in some cases copyright for text and images in one article could be held separately, and so either may not be available electronically.

ISC supports joining the subscription service pending positive feedback from the faculty. Librarians will meet with Divisions and then with individual departments to address needs and concerns.

CCL Events:

  • Faculty Fridays: Discussion of pedagogy; general open session.
  • Creative Computing Series: Thursdays; hands-on instruction
  • Training Room is being used more
  • SACC: open house for students is set for Dec. 4
  • Longer hours during Hell Week and during finals
  • Buffer Day: Dec. 11; ITS will provide a study break

Longer hours should be available in the spring when students return from Off-Campus Study programs.

Next meeting: December 13. No meal available at Faculty House.
Location: JRC 202

Respectfully submitted,
Terri Phipps
