November 8, 2006
Excerpts

Present: C. Hunter, E. Marzluff, J. Meehan, S. Rebelsky, T. Roberts, J. Swartz, E. Willis

The meeting came to order at 4:20 p.m. in Room 226 of the Rosenfield Student Center. The minutes of November 1, 2006 were approved.

President’s Remarks

The President was traveling.

Dean’s Remarks

The Dean noted that 2007-08 departmental budget requests have been received. The academic and non-academic subcommittees will begin reviews next week. E. Marzluff asked the Dean to ask Marci Sortor to come to Council to present information on the big budget drivers.

Council Remarks

E. Willis asked the Dean and President to look into the possibility of expanding the food options in the Spencer Grill.

She noted that she is continuing to receive responses from the recent faculty meeting discussion of interdisciplinary appointments and review. She specifically noted that she will hold a separate session with the early career faculty to discuss EKI hiring and the EKI review process.

Willis noted that Tom Moore would like to resign from the ad hoc committee on faculty voting. Council agreed with his request.

E. Marzluff noted that the interdisciplinary position proposal guidance is ready for full distribution and she will prepare a brief cover memo to facilitate this.

Marzluff noted that the next faculty meeting agenda will focus on discussion of a faculty development workshop on advising that was held last summer.

J. Meehan urged the President to continue his investigation of the issues involved with Medicare and the College health benefits policy regarding unmarried partners of faculty members as they reach retirement.

Council considered the question of whether the memo about promotion to full professor should be distributed to faculty members before their sixth year, so that they could better plan an appropriate career trajectory. Council decided that it was appropriate to distribute a letter as part of the faculty member’s first triennial review after promotion to association professor.

The Consortium for Faculty Diversity at Liberal Arts Colleges (CFD-LAC)

The Dean noted that DePauw University is now administering the CFD-LAC Program (formerly known as the Consortium for a Strong Minority Presence). They have created an all electronic access system. The system currently has 130 completed applications available and continues to add application information as it is received with all applications urged by early November. The Dean said that he would send a spreadsheet that lists all the applicants to departments when it is received in December.

Special Search-Theatre and Chemistry

Council discussed personnel proposals from the Departments of Theatre and Chemistry.

The meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
