November 19, 2003

Present: S. Barber, V. Brown, L. Gregg-Jolly, M. Montgomery, R. Osgood, M. Schneider, J. Swartz, R. Vetter

The meeting came to order a 4:20 p.m. in the Nollen House Conference Room.

The 11/5/03 minutes and excerpts were amended and approved.

The Dean distributed documents from the Writing Lab and the Sociology Department, and the 10/30/03 memorandum from Council to the faculty regarding the faculty salary process and several faculty comments received in response to that memorandum.

The President entered the meeting at 4:30 p.m.

President's Remarks

He stated that he had just returned from day long interviews with Rhodes Scholars in Des Moines. He thanked Brad Bateman for his talk on Asa Turner's many contributions to the College at a recent alumni event in Massachusetts.

Dean's Remarks

The Dean reviewed the staffing situation in the Physical Education Department.

The Dean reviewed the staffing situation in the Writing Lab. There was discussion.

The Dean reviewed the staffing situation in the Sociology Department and introduced a proposal from that Department for Council consideration. There was considerable discussion.

Council Remarks

L. Gregg-Jolly asked the President for his idea of compelling criteria for making an opportunistic hire. He responded that he would like to see a proven teaching track record in a liberal arts college, an exceptional curriculum vita, and he would be particularly motivated if that person were in a discipline which has historically seen underrepresentation of minorities in its faculty ranks-for example in the natural sciences.

The President left the meeting at 5:45 p.m.

There was continued discussion of a proposal from the Sociology Department.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:02 p.m.
