Minutes of the Meeting of the Executive Council
May 5, 2004
Excerpts

Present: S. Barber, V. Brown, L. Gregg-Jolly, M. Montgomery, W. Moyer, R. Osgood, M. Schneider, J. Swartz, R. Vetter

The meeting came to order at 4:20 p.m. in the Nollen House Conference Room.

The minutes and excerpts of 4/28/04 were amended and approved.

President's Remarks

The President complimented the Mathematics and Computer Science Department on wrapping up things quickly in a way that Pamela Ferguson would have been happy with.

He noted that the recent report on the Trustees meeting inadvertently omitted the fact that the change in Senior Faculty Status was approved.

Dean's Remarks

He distributed a table which presents the outcome of faculty searches for the past two years. The President raised an issue about the failure of the affirmative action information process, as implemented at the College, to provide important information to departments in recruitment.

The Dean noted that Jim Sumner reports that 428 paid deposits have been received. The admissions goal is to enroll 400 first year students. Recent experience is that we are likely to lose ~50 who have paid deposits. The Admissions Office is now evaluating transfer applications.

He updated Council on the status of faculty searches.

Council Remarks

L Gregg-Jolly asked that the annual diversity report be distributed campus-wide before the end of the semester.

M Schneider noted that in the August 25, 1999 Executive Council minutes Bruce Voyles had asked that an organizational chart of the administration be provided and that there is no evidence that this was ever done. The President responded that if such a thing exists it will be made available and if it doesn't we can make one available.

V. Brown noted increasing student complaints about things getting lost in the mailroom.

Continued Discussion of Faculty Position Requests

M. Montgomery reviewed the previous discussion of faculty position requests. There was a brief discussion of the diversity initiative. The Dean reminded Council that there is money available for faculty to go to professional meetings for the purpose of recruiting minority candidates in the same way that Charles Cunningham had done recently. The Dean reminded Council that a candidate could offer diversity in the physical sense, but also by adding diversity to the curriculum or to pedagogy.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
